Why 'Three Things'?

Writer's picture: Catherine SeedCatherine Seed

Want to know where the name 'Three Things Theatre' came from? Here are three good reasons:

  1. There are Three Things

    1. We offer training in improv, sketch and storytelling. While there are wonderful overlaps between these art forms, they each have their own methods and community and so we offer them separately.

  2. The rule of three

    1. Vital to comedy, comedy thrives in patterns and breaking patterns. The smallest number of things from which you can see a pattern is three, and that is why it features so heavily in comedy. Next time you hear someone laugh or are watching a sitcom/special, note how many times the rule of three has been used.

  3. The Third Thought

    1. As we build our improvisation skills, a technique we deploy more and more it the 'third thought'. Rather than the first idea, we run with our third idea, or the third association we have. This leads to more creative and unexpected choices.

To break the patterns, here is a fourth- the alliteration of Three Things Theatre is pretty nice! We tried Three Things Comedy for a while, but it didn't sound as good.

Three Things tasters are starting in Oxford and Banbury at the beginning of October 2024. Tickets via eventbrite.
